First we did some clean and simple shots, and then we went a little wild with the styling for a funky tribal feel. We had a great time!

Maribel and Josef are a sweet couple from Texas expecting their first child - a daughter named Sofia. We took Maribel's maternity photos in Washington Square on a beautiful cloudy day. We narrowly missed the "heavy rain" forecasted for the day, but we got enough drizzle to pull out the umbrella for some beautiful rainy pictures. There were some wonderful touches to our session, like the red dress Maribel's mom made for the photos and the baby booties her dad sent from Texas. I can't wait to meet little Sofia!

Meet Amelia, one of the most adorable babies I've ever had the privilege of photographing. I went to her home in New Jersey to spend an hour with this cutie just a few weeks before her first birthday. We took some photos along the water and at a playground, and then we headed home to finish up the session in her beautifully decorated nursery. I had a great time with Amelia and her parents - both lawyers - who are the sweetest mom and dad ever. I'm looking forward to them all again soon!

As you may remember, last year I photographed my mom for her birthday. Well this summer I visited my parents in Lubbock, and I decided to get some more family portraits. I started with some portraits of my dad for the back cover of his new book (coming out in March!). Then I took a few of my grandpa for his 97th birthday. And finally, I dragged my parents out to a beautiful park at the edge of town to get some golden hour portraits of the two of them together. They've been married 30 years, and they still act like giddy newlyweds!

I also had to photograph my mom's incredible new SHOES!!! I wanted to buy them so badly, but I'll have to settle for photographing them. Sigh.

Alissa + Tom's Wall Street Wedding | New York Wedding Photographer

This weekend I got to photograph Alissa and Tom's wedding at the rooftop of The Setai Club on Wall Street. They're such a sweet couple; they've been together for 12 years and have lived on three continents. I loved every minute of their wedding, and it was so clear how much they love each other and how happy they are to finally be married. I'm not going to lie - I cried a little behind my camera.

It was the hottest day of the year (103 degrees), so we had to make it snappy with the formals. We were really lucky that there were so many great spots right across the street.

Then we went inside to cool off and got some shots of the Setai's dramatic lobby.

Then we dragged the whole family out into the street, which was closed to cars because we were next door to the New York Stock Exchange. Beautiful!

I loved seeing Alissa and Tom with their guests. Everyone there knew the couple so well, and it really showed. They were just glowing all night.

New York Marriage Equality 2011 - Historic NYC Pride March

Last week, New York became the largest state to legalize gay marriage. Two days later, over a million people gathered in Manhattan to celebrate this victory for marriage equality at the city's Pride March. I've been to this event in past years, but nothing came close to the euphoric mood at Sunday's march. The crowds greeted Governor Andrew Cuomo - accompanied by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn - with deafening cheers. Spectators held up thousands of printed signs reading "Thank You Governor Cuomo" and "Promise Kept," and some reading "Homos for Cuomo in 2016." Spontaneous proposals took place along the parade route, and many couples held up signs proclaiming their intention to marry in July. Some of the loudest cheers greeted Governor Cuomo as the parade passed in front of the Stonewall Inn - the site of the deadly riot that started the gay rights movement more than 40 years ago. The March was a beautiful celebration of a great moment in this country's civil rights history, and I'm proud to have been a part of it.

Yesterday I had the incredible opportunity to photograph the students and faculty of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion as they marched from their campus in Greenwich Village to Park 51 near the World Trade Center to express their support for the Muslim community center in Lower Manhattan. At Park 51 they were greeted by members of the community and escorted inside the site, where the group said a prayer for peace.

After living in New York for a full year, I decided to start working on a project that would celebrate the local small business owners that make the city such a lively and diverse place to live. Many of them are immigrants, many come from underprivileged backgrounds, and all work incredibly hard to make their businesses flourish. For the most part, theirs are stories of success, and they deserve to be celebrated.

Last weekend I had the joy of photographing Karneisha and Dan with their son Dan Jr. I loved doing little Dan's newborn photos in January, and it was wonderful to see how much he's grown since then. Last week I took my husband on a surprise vacation for his birthday - he didn't know where we were going until we got to the airport! We went to Puerto Morelos, a tiny fishing village that somehow managed to remain a slice of real Mexico on the Riviera Maya in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We spent a heavenly five days drinking margaritas on the beach and swimming in the sparkling turquoise water. Now I'm tanned, relaxed, and ready to post some pictures!

Congrats to Linda and Brian, who are getting married this June. Linda is a law student at NYU and Brian is a teacher, and both of them are total sweethearts.

Halloween in the Village is legendary, so I was really excited to get out there and get some photos. I started with the children's parade.

Then the sun went down and the grown-ups came out to play.

And of course, we can't forget the obligatory picture of Josh and me in our awesome vampire costumes. The fangs looked so real that several people asked me if I had filed my teeth or gotten implants.

Yesterday I photographed Eve, who is expecting her first child and absolutely glowing. If the baby's a girl, Eve and Josh are going to name her Marley-Simone, for two of their favorite musicians. Eve's due date is Christmas Day, which means this lucky girl is always going to be on vacation for her birthday! I can't wait to see Eve, Josh, and little Marley-Simone for newborn photos in January!

This Sunday morning I met up with Mark and Phoebe, a sweet couple with a romantic story. After going to high school together in Singapore, they reconnected ten years later in New York. I met them through Mark's brother Chris, who gave them a portrait session as a birthday present - their birthdays are within a week of each other! (Chris popped in toward the end of the session and we got some adorable sibling photos.) Mark and Phoebe were a little shy at first, but they warmed up quickly, and they were so sweet to each other! Today I photographed baby Lucas, who is 6 months old and a PERFECT baby model. He barely stopped smiling the whole time he was here, he sat in my big salad bowl forever while I snapped a zillion pictures, and then he promptly dozed off on command when we wanted to take some sleeping pictures. Yup, perfect. My theory is that he's so happy because his Mom and Dad adore him and smother him with love and attention. They are great parents, and it's easy to tell they love each other almost as much as they love their little boy.

Tribal Fashion: Yomaris

It's been about a month since I moved into my new apartment on Bleecker Street, but today was the first time I broke out the lights and did a shoot in the living room. Yomaris, who modeled for me, is both a gorgeous model and a very talented actress and singer. But most importantly, she let me doodle all over her face!

I got the idea to do this tribal face-painting from another photographer's work, and Yomaris agreed to try it. We had a lot of fun and got some great shots, and she actually left my apartment and walked to her car with the face paint still on! What an awesome gal.

Yesterday I had a wonderful fashion shoot with Constance, a beautiful and talented model. We did an urban goth theme on a couple of beautifully graffitied streets in Soho, and then Constance took out this amazing green velvet evening gown that she actually made herself. We got some shots in Washington Square Park, and then Constance actually let me talk her into getting into the fountain. I'd been wanting to do a water shoot for a long time, and Constance was incredible and very Lady of the Lake with the dress in the water.

Central Park Wedding After-Session: Lisa + Joe

This Saturday I did a wedding after-session with adorable newlyweds Lisa and Joe. They had a destination wedding on a Florida beach, but they wanted some more relaxed pictures of the two of them. They're both native New Yorkers, so we decided on Central Park. We got lots of great shots in the castle and the Shakespeare Garden, and it was so much fun watching the people picnicking on the lawn turn around to stare at Lisa and Joe. One kid even snapped a couple of pictures!

Yesterday I did a fun shoot with cute couple Sairina and Julie. They live in Brooklyn, so we shot at beautiful Prospect Park. Orah + David Wedding, part 1

In May I had the privilege of shooting a wedding in Israel with Larry from Deja Views. The groom was Larry's nephew, and I was very happy to help him record a special event in his own family. David is American and Orah is French, and they met after moving to Israel. The wedding guests were from three countries, so I got to practice all my languages! They are such a sweet and loving couple, and they had a very beautiful and emotional wedding. I'm going to share more photos than I should, but there was just so much going on that I can't help myself.

New York City Gay Pride Parade

The NYC Gay Pride Parade is quite an event. It runs down Fifth Avenue for fifty blocks, and this year it drew a million spectators. With my handy press pass, I got to walk with the parade inside the barricades instead of outside. It was a real experience, and I got some amazing photos. Here are just a few of them:

The NYC Gay Pride Parade started to commemorate an anti-gay riot that took place in 1969 at a gay bar in Greenwich Village. These are the people who were actually there that night. They were greeted by some of the loudest cheering I've ever heard.

First Anniversay

Last week was my first anniversary with my husband, Josh. The top layer of our wedding cake was surprisingly still delicious, thanks to Fancy Cakes by Leslie.

My mother-in-law also had my bouquet from Petal's Edge re-created, and it was totally gorgeous. It was ivory roses, hydrangeas, and Picasso calla lilies, among other exotic flowers whose names I don't know.

And now I'm going to break two self-imposed blogging rules and give you a photo that is 1) taken by someone else, and 2) of me. I just think this picture my father-in-law took is so precious that I had to share it. This is me and my hubby about to eat our cake.

Engagement Session: Rachael + Ben

I've known Rachael so long she's like my little sister, and now she's getting married! She and her fiance, Ben, are so adorable, and I couldn't be happier for them. Swine Flu on a Plane!

On Tuesday I flew from Israel to New York, so I'm now working in the city. We flew Aerosvit (the Ukranian national airline) because it was cheap, and it turned out to be an interesting flight. About halfway through the flight, the flight attendant started handing out surgical masks. I asked her what was going on, and she said that a passenger was ill with what might be swine flu. So we all wore our masks the rest of the flight, and when the plane landed they didn't let anyone in until they had a doctor confirm that it wasn't swine flu. As public health measures go, it was pretty impressive. But it was definitely inconvenient, and I was not excited about the possibility of being quarantined on a plane with someone carrying a deadly disease. Luckily, everything worked out ok, and I got some great pictures of passengers wearing masks.

My wonderful next-door neighbors in Jerusalem, Ruti and Tal, are having a baby this summer. They have been so sweet all year, inviting my husband and me over for dinner, showing us around Israel, and even having us over to Tal's parents' house for Rosh Hashana. So when Ruti told me she was pregnant, I decided to give her a maternity session as a gift.

Ruti is one of the sexiest, most beautiful pregnant women I've ever met. She's so centered and comfortable with her body, and she's totally glowing. She and her husband Tal are so in love and so happy about their baby; they were such a joy to photograph. I won't be around for the birth of their little boy, but I can't wait to meet him either next time I'm in Israel or when Ruti and Tal come visit me in New York!

Also shot in the old Jerusalem train station with Beth, this series explores the relationship of femininity with religion and cultural identity. By shooting this series in a rundown building with the golden late afternoon light, I was also seeking to contrast the two major stereotypes of Jerusalem - City of Gold and war zone - neither of which is really accurate and neither of which can be understood without the other.

Last weekend, I went with my husband and his rabbinical school class on a tour of the Negev, Israel's desert southern region. We saw a solar power plant, climbed a mountain, and spent the night on a Kibbutz. All in all, a fabulous trip.

While climbing Mount Solomon, some of the guys take a leak into the crater.

Our guides taught us this crazy hiking game involving eating M&Ms off of stacked rocks while holding your foot in one hand and your ear in the other. Israelis are nuts!

And yes, cows can be cool.

Women of the Wall is a group that has been trying for years to get women the right to pray at the Western Wall. This morning, I went to one of their monthly services, along with a large chunk of the CCAR delegation.

And here's the opposition, trying to get the WOW women to stop singing. One of them kept pushing me and tried to take my camera, but I took her picture and threatened to show it to the police. Ha!

This Saturday I did a Valentine's Day portrait session with a wonderful couple in Jerusalem. We got lucky and it was such a gorgeous day that it merited ice cream (which found its way into my photos). We had some adventures, and even got yelled at for taking pictures of the American Consulate. But the shots were great, so it was all worth it.

Last week, my parents and grandmother came to visit me in Jerusalem. I took the opportunity to take lots of portraits of them; it was good practice, since I haven't done nearly enough work with people who are not babies or beautiful girls in their twenties.

Christmas in Bethlehem

Christmas Eve in Bethlehem is a big deal. Thousands of people come, and there are concerts and other festivities. This year, there was a famous singer from Spain who performed. I got down in front of the stage with about fifty of my closest photographer and reporter friends, and did my best to get pictures of her. The rest of the celebration, I just wandered around trying to capture the atmosphere, which ranged from ecstatic to meditative. It was definitely an amazing experience, and I got some wonderful photos.

After a hearing at the Supreme Court, I went to a rally co-sponsored by ACRI about "hot return," a highly controversial practice where the army turns refugees back at the Egyptian border without giving them a chance to apply for asylum-seeker status.

This woman's sign says, "we are all refugees"

A reference to the Passover quote "let my people go." Clever, yes?

We've arrived in Jerusalem, so I made the obligatory trip to the Old City. I spent most of my time at the Western Wall photographing the people praying there. Of course, most of my photos are of the women's side, except the ones I took through the screen and the ones of the plaza outside.

Dublin and Venice (Honeymoon)

For our honeymoon, my new hubby and I went to Dublin and Venice. Dublin has the nicest people in the world and the hottest nightlife, and Venice is the most romantic city I've ever seen. We stay in a little B&B (Diamante e Smeraldo) a minute away from the Rialto bridge where they serve you breakfast in bed.
